Motorbike Detailing

In the detailing world motorbike details are often overlooked. Whether it's a sunny day toy or a daily commuter we have packages to suit.

Motorbike detailing provides unique challenges when it comes to detailing. Intricate areas, exposed electrical and mechanical parts need much more delicate care when cleaning. We find that the best approach is to remove fairings (if present), screens, seat and tail units, if we need to, in order to be able to fully detail and access all areas. We use a steam machine with precision nozzles to delicately clean rather than soak everything with a pressure washer.

A brief overview of the steps that are carried out during the process:

• Motorbike bodywork removed to access all areas to be cleaned (if required)
• Motorbike fully degreased and decontaminated using specialised products and a selection of brushes and tools aided by steam cleaning to thoroughly clean all areas of the motorbike
• Full exhaust system cleaned using specific cleaning products to remove baked on debris and discolouration
• All bodywork fairings etc cleaned
• Motorbike fully dried using drying machine
• All painted surfaces decontaminated using clay bar

Paint Enhancement & Correction

Paint correction is a term that describes the process of restoring and rejuvenating the paintwork of a vehicle, mostly through the elimination of surface imperfections. These imperfections include things like swirl marks & fine scratches, bird dropping etching & acid rain etching, holograms, and isolated scratches.

The term paint correction should only be used if these imperfections are properly removed and not just covered up or hidden with filler based products. The actual corrective process itself comprises of a small amount of clear coat or paint being removed from the surface with the use of abrasive polishes, which are applied and worked in with appropriate polishing machines, in order to level out the surface.

Before any paint correction is undertaken, a thorough detailed wash and decontamination of the vehicle is performed. Paintwork is properly washed and cleaned to remove any loose dirt, then after the wash process it is clayed with a specialist automotive clay bar, which safely removes any bonded surface contaminants such as tar spots and fallout. It is important these contaminants are removed before the paint correction process.

The polishing is usually a multi stage process and a range of different grades of polish are used, ranging from heavier cutting compounds, which remove the surface material, to finer products which then remove any marks that the heavier products may have inflicted and generally refine the finish.

During the paint correction process we use a paint depth gauge. This measures the thickness of the paint on the metal panels and is used before, during and after the process to monitor how much material is being removed and ensure an excess is not removed which could leave the paint too thin.

Specialist LED lamps which replicate the effect of direct sunlight on the surface are also used during the process to check the condition of the paintwork and see how successfully the surface scratches and imperfections are being removed. Some scratches or imperfections may actually be too deep or severe to safely remove without risking removing to much surface paint or clear coat and so are minimized and reduced as best as possible using techniques with the machine polisher and polishing products that round off the edges of the scratches and make them far less apparent in direct light.

After correction, the panels are wiped down with an isopropyl alcohol based product which removes any oils that may have been left over from the polish and reveals the true finish, including any areas that may have been missed or require a little more work.

Depending on what our client has requested, we offer various wax and ceramic coatings to protect and enhance the paintwork to complete the process. Once complete, fully corrected paintwork will have a deep shine and produce stunning reflections.

Ceramic Coating Maintenance

Do Ceramic Coatings require any maintenance? Absolutely. Ceramic coatings are phenomenal products. However, myths circulating throughout the detailing industry have made some people believe that ceramic coatings are some alien material that exerts a force field around the car, repelling everything from dirt to scratches. We need to address a few of these misconceptions.

Ceramic Coatings Prevent All Scratches - ceramic coatings are hard and will resist abrasion but don't expect miracles.

Ceramic Coatings are Self-Cleaning - this is far from the truth. Ceramic coatings make it harder for dust and contamination to stick to the surface, helping your car stay cleaner for longer. However, dirt, brake dust, water spots, and other road grime will eventually build up on the surface of the coating itself, inhibiting its hydrophobic properties and dulling its shine. While you still need to wash your vehicle, ceramic coatings make this an absolute breeze. You should always use a Ceramic Shampoo or even go touchless if you follow a regular cleaning schedule.

Ceramic Coatings are Indestructible - when maintained well, high-quality ceramic coatings will last for years. Even so, indestructible they are not. As with anything in life, they will eventually wear away. It depends heavily on the quality of the product and the initial quality of the installation. Moreover, depending on how and where you drive your vehicle, the coatings can wear off considerably quicker. If you go off-roading or drifting, or if you wash your car rarely or use an automatic car wash with strong chemicals and hard brushes, the longevity of your coating will be reduced.

How to wash a ceramic coated vehicle - ceramic coatings need to cure for a minimum of 24 hours, depending on the product, before you can drive the vehicle. However, you need to resist washing it for another 2-3 weeks after that as the coating continues to cure to its final strength. After this, you should wash your ceramic coating at least twice a month to remove the film and grime picked up from your daily driving. A regular car wash using a ceramic shampoo is perfect. Strong acidic and alkaline cleaners can potentially degrade your coating depending on its contents. High-end ceramic coatings that we use come with 90%+ SiO2 particles and are fairly resistant to acidic and alkaline cleaners. However, if you wash your vehicle regularly, you shouldn't need to use these often, if at all. Improper washing techniques will scratch and mar the surface of your vehicle regardless of whether you have a ceramic coating. The two-bucket method still applies. Avoid automatic car washes if you can. Depending on your usage and driving environment, you will need to perform a decontamination process every 3 to 6 months. You don't need to put wax or paint sealant on top of your ceramic coating - it already exhibits all of their protective and hydrophobic properties in much greater intensity, and stacking products will only hinder the coating underneath.
